Silicon Valley Brace FAQ
What is it?

The Silicon Valley BraceTM is an innovative hypercorrective brace custom designed for each patient. Science has proven bracing to prevent surgery and straighten the spine as long as the brace is worn and it is hypercorrective: straightening the spine as much as possible in-brace.

By custom designing the brace to the patient using a corrective 3D scanning method; modifying the brace to ensure it straightens the spine as much as possible while being comfortable to wear; monitoring the brace with standing MRI to ensure it continues to straighten the spine as much as possible over time; taking time to carefully fit the brace to the patient; and continuing to modify the brace to ensure it is as good as it can be; the Silicon Valley Brace is not only a brace, but a revolutionary approach to bracing. All of these steps are performed by your treating doctor, ensuring the best possible treatment outcome and a spine that is as straight as it can be.

Who needs it?

Children and teens with scoliosis curves 25º and above should be treating their scoliosis with a brace as this is the only non-surgical treatment proven by science to be effective for curves of this size.

When is it recommended?

The Silicon Valley Brace is recommended for children and teens with scoliosis who want to prevent surgery and reduce the size of their curve. Because bracing is the only proven non-surgical method to straighten the spine for curves 25º and above, the Silicon Valley Brace is highly recommended for children and teens with curves 25º and above.

What does it include?

The Silicon Valley Brace includes standing MRI imaging of the spine to assess the curve; a unique three dimensional scan of the body; a custom designed hypercorrective brace; a thorough fitting process.

The Silicon Valley Brace is as much a method as it is a brace. To ensure the brace is able to straighten the spine as much as possible, it is highly recommended to utilize our Silicon Valley Method to treat contractures, reduce stiffness, and enable the brace to maximally straighten the spine.

Special Qualifications & Restrictions
  • While there are no special qualifications or restrictions for using the Silicon Valley Brace, a comprehensive treatment program should be used to achieve best results. Without addressing contractures and underlying nerve tension before bracing, the ability to straighten the spine can be limited, affecting brace performance. Therefore to ensure success we highly recommend The Silicon Valley Method to ensure the best possible treatment outcome.

ScoliSnapShot Targeted In-Brace Analysis FAQ
What is it?

The ScoliSnapShot Targeted In-Brace Analysis uses radiation free standing MRI to look at a scoliosis curve while a brace is being worn to see how well the brace is correcting the scoliosis curve.

Who needs it?

Children and teens who are currently utilizing a brace to treat their scoliosis who want to make sure their brace is helping to straighten their spine as much as possible.

When is it recommended?

The ScoliSnapShot Targeted In-Brace Analysis is designed for kids with scoliosis who are currently using a brace and whose curve can be seen in a single image. This analysis service is perfect for making sure a brace is doing its job and detecting any problems (ie. decreased brace performance) so that the brace can be corrected or improved.

What does it include?

The ScoliSnapShot Targeted In-Brace Analysis includes regular standing MRI images of a scoliosis curve, clinical measurements of the curve to determine if it is improving with the brace, and a thorough analysis of the brace’s performance in correcting the curve; as well as recommendations for how the brace can be improved.

Special Qualifications & Restrictions
  • Typical requirements for a MRI apply: no metallic implants, recent surgeries, or other metal objects.
  • The scoliosis brace must be MRI friendly (ie. not contain ferrous metal)
ScoliSnapShot Full Length In-Brace Analysis FAQ
What is it?

The ScoliSnapShot Full Length In-Brace Analysis uses radiation free standing MRI to look at the entire spine including the scoliosis curve while a brace is being worn to see how well the brace is correcting the curve and affecting the spine.

Who needs it?

Children and teens who are currently utilizing a brace to treat their scoliosis who want to make sure their brace is helping to straighten their spine as much as possible.

When is it recommended?

The ScoliSnapShot Full Length In-Brace Analysis is designed for kids with scoliosis who are currently using a brace and is ideal for larger curves or complex curve patterns which do not fit in a single MRI scan. This analysis service is perfect for making sure a brace is doing its job and detecting any problems (ie. decreased brace performance) so that the brace can be corrected or improved.

What does it include?

The ScoliSnapShot Full Length In-Brace Analysis includes regular standing MRI images of the entire spine (head to hips) including the scoliosis curve, clinical measurements of the curve to determine if it is improving with the brace, and a thorough analysis of the brace’s performance in correcting the curve; as well as recommendations for how the brace can be improved.

Special Qualifications & Restrictions
  • Typical requirements for a MRI apply: no metallic implants, recent surgeries, or other metal objects.
  • The scoliosis brace must be MRI friendly (ie. not contain ferrous metal)

Who needs it?

Children and teens who are currently using a brace to treat their scoliosis.

When is it recommended?

The ScoliBIP is recommended for anyone using a scoliosis brace, and is ideal for patients who have worn their brace for a while and have reached a plateau where their results have stopped improving. The ScoliBIP is also ideal for patients whose brace has began to degrade in performance due to changes in the patient’s body, age of the brace, etc.

What does it include?

The ScoliBIP includes standing MRI scans of the entire spine while wearing the brace as well as modifications and adjustments to improve the braces’ effectiveness at straightening the spine. The ScoliBIP includes ongoing scans and improvements for a patient’s brace throughout the course of their treatment.

ScoliSpineDx Scan FAQ
What is it?

The ScoliSpineDx scan uses radiation free standing MRI to look at the entire spine, from head to hips, at a high resolution to find the root cause of any problems that are present. This diagnostic standing MRI takes less than an hour to complete.

Who needs it?

Children and teens who have an undiagnosed problem causing pain or a scoliosis.

When is it recommended?

The ScoliSpineDx scan is designed for parents, children, and teens who do not know the cause of their scoliosis or pain. The ScoliSpineDx looks at the spine in a way that is not possible with x-ray so that the cause of pain or the cause of a scoliosis can be discovered.

More About Standing MRI

Written and reviewed for scientific and factual accuracy by Dr. Austin Jelcick, PhD and Dr. Matthew Janzen, DC

Our screening, monitoring, and diagnostic services including the SureScreen SnapShot; ScoliSnapShot Monitoring; and ScoliSpineDx scan utilize a revolutionary way to look at the spine: standing MRI. By using standing MRI we can screen for scoliosis; monitor a curve; check the effectiveness of braces; and diagnose underlying problems, all without harmful radiation from x-rays. Because standing MRI utilizes magnets and not ionizing radiation, it can be used as often as needed to ensure a scoliosis is not worsening and that the brace and treatment plan is helping the spine to grow as straight as possible. You can learn more about the benefits of standing MRI under our treatment section as well!

Standing MRI Provides Better Screening

Scientific research has shown that the earlier a curve is detected and treatment is begun, the better the final treatment result. While you can learn more about why this is, the steps we take to treat a scoliosis curve, and all the research behind it on our treatment page, screening for scoliosis is a key part to treatment. After all, with proper screening we can catch a scoliosis before structural changes occur, making the job of straightening the spine worlds easier.

Improved Monitoring with Standing MRI

We know from scientific research that a scoliosis curve can get worse surprisingly fast during period of rapid growth (growth spurts). Because of the traditional reliance on x-rays, monitoring a curve has been limited to only checking the spine every 6-12 months. Thanks to the revolutionary standing MRI, we can now check for, and monitor a scoliosis curve as often as needed to make sure it does not unexpectedly get worse. This ground breaking method for monitoring provides a new level of care that was not possible in the past.
